Thieves are believed to have used ladders to raid a Maryport charity shop.

They broke into the shop on Senhouse Street and took the shop’s £50 float, a full charity tin and £12 cash.

Police think the thieves used ladders to climb up to the first floor of the building to break in between 12.45pm on Saturday and 8am on Monday.

Joan Hunter, manager, discovered the shop run by Copeland Occupational and Social Centre (COSC) had been broken into.

She said: “It was absolutely devastating. I just can’t believe someone would do this.”

The shop will now be closed until after Christmas.

Mrs Hunter added: “I don’t know how much we will lose from this.”

COSC offers activities for people with physical disabilities and has two centres in Maryport and Cleator Moor. Money raised from the shop goes towards their running costs.
