A man pleaded with a judge to jail him rather than fine him.
Bradley John Hickman, 29, appeared before district judge Gerald Chalk at Carlisle magistrates’ court and asked to be sent to prison yesterday, rather than pay any money.
The court heard how he had originally owed £1,000 to the court in fines but had managed to get that down to £130.
The judge heard how Hickman, of Highfield Court, Wigton, had got involved in an argument with another man outside Outrageous nightclub, on English Street, last November.
Police officers arrived and asked him to leave but he became very aggressive and verbally abusive towards them.
They asked him to leave but he carried on shouting. Members of the public could hear what he was shouting and he was very drunk, the court heard.
Hickman, who admitted being drunk and disorderly on November 30, was fined £60 and ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a £20 victim surcharge - totalling £165. With the money to be added on to what he still owed the court, Hickman said he was self employed and had no work planned for the future and refused to pay the fines.
“Send me to prison,” he told the judge, and was jailed for 10 days for refusing to pay court fines.
