Cumbrian pub landlady promotes music nights with a safety message

A landlady has joined forces with police to promote safety in a west Cumbrian town centre.
Michelle Park, of The Royal Oak in Workington, will host a Dreamland night for 200 music fans to listen to DJs blasting out tunes.
The 34-year-old is keen to promote safety as well as safe sex. And on a more serious note, police rape alarms will be handed out on the night.
“We need to change the whole face of the town, as we don’t have a nightclub” said Michelle.
“Because we are on the front line we are keen to work with the police and the authorities, as they are there to help.
“We just want people of all ages to come along and enjoy themselves.”
The whole pub will be transformed for the event, which takes place on Saturday, February 2.
After the Pow Street pub finishes trading for lunch at 4pm, it will be stripped of furniture and set up for the night ahead, complete with ultra-violet lighting.
“The Dreamland DJs don’t usually come to a pub,” said Michelle.
“They are used to playing to 20,000 people – it’s bizarre that they are coming here. We have had lots of interest already.”
Michelle said that she got in touch with the police and collected information from a family planning clinic, which shows people that they can have a good “safe” night.
Some of the DJs confirmed for the night are BK featuring Rich Halpin, Millsy, Boag and Marko.
Dreamland starts at 7pm. The pub has been granted a licence to trade until 6am for the event.
Tickets cost £10 on the door, or £6 for a special “invite” ticket from www.facebook.com/dreamland.cumbria
