Egremont moved closer to top spot in National Conference One with an impressive 56-4 win against Cumbrian rivals Millom.
Millom had staged a festival of rugby and the day had started with the youngsters showing off their skills, before Egremont powered their way to the league win over their hosts.
Egremont’s head coach John Brocklebank and his coaching staff knew that Millom had a habit of raising their game when the local bragging rights were up for grabs.
The game got off to a roaring start with rugby union star Peter Murphy scoring a try within 43 seconds which John Paul Brocklebank converted. Millom came back straight away with an unconverted try and the next 25 minutes.
Then on 30 minutes Ali Leak cracked the Millom defence to score the second try, again converted by Brocklebank. Seven minutes later ever-green Gary Elliott dived over to score a third try, converted by Brocklebank.
Still Rangers weren’t finished Brocklebank swung a long ball outside for young winger Ryan Barnes to dive in at the corner.
With Millom on the ropes Murphy added another four points straight from the kick-off and Brocklebank finished-off the first half with his fourth conversion for a 28-4 lead.
Rangers were in no mood to let Millom back.
On 57 minutes Egremont scored a well-worked try from Leon Crellin, and again Brocklebank added the extras.
This was the beginning of the end for Millom.
The final try of the day came with a second from Crellin in the corner.
The result puts Rangers within a point of the summit with a game in hand.
They will welcome joint leaders Bradford Dudley Hill for next week’s game.
- Kells extended their advantage at the top of the Iggesund Cumberland ARL’s First Division with another emphatic win. In a re-arranged fixture they beat Cockermouth Titans 50-6.
