Ensuring young people’s talent is developed

A NEW initiative has been launched in Cumbria in a bid to save a generation of young unemployed talent.

Young Million, set up by leadership development organisation Common Purpose, offers leadership courses for young unemployed people in the county. They have also been rolled out at other locations across the UK including London, Manchester, Newcastle, Bolton and Glasgow.

The courses offer training and development opportunities that they would have otherwise received from employers were they in work.

The county’s first course will be held at Lillyhall’s Energus building on October 3, 6 and 13 and will be sponsored by Harvest Housing, whose group chief executive, Ian Perry, said: “It is an opportunity to make a real difference to the life chances of young people in our communities.

“We are committed to assisting people excluded from the job market into work and we are delighted to be able to sponsor this initiative.”

The scheme is open to people aged 18 to 25 and courses are free.

There are nearly one million unemployed young people in the UK. Of the 8,469 unemployed people in Cumbria, 30 per cent are aged 18-25.

Just £100 will cover the cost of one young person to attend a three-day course, or organisations and individuals are invited to make a real difference to unemployed young people in Cumbria by fully sponsoring a course.

“For many young people, their careers are being put on hold while they struggle to find jobs, but this must not mean that their learning, and particularly their learning about leadership and producing change, should be put on hold too” said Julia Middleton, founder and Chief Executive of Common Purpose.
