ROUTES 2 Work is a regeneration initiative, formed in 2005 to support people disadvantaged by unemployment and social exclusion into employment. It offers bespoke training and support packages to people who might otherwise struggle to find employment.

The future for Gen II, by Mike Smith

cemikeaward SINCE its formation in 2000 GEN II has provided apprenticeships for over 1,000 local people, most of whom have then gone on to secure good jobs and prosperous careers. In the meantime, ENERGUS has been created at Lillyhall, to provide, among other things, state-of-the art training facilities in West Cumbria. By marrying the two companies, we will be able to continue providing quality training to young people as well as a world-class environment in which to learn. At the same time GEN II and ENERGUS has joined with partners such as Lakes College, the University of Cumbria and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) to develop a concept called Britain’s Energy Coast Campus in West Cumbria.

Mercury’s rising at Westlakes

CEMERCURY A MARKETING consultancy is planning to expand after becoming the first business to move into the University of Central Lancashire’s incubator unit at Westlakes Science Park, near Whitehaven.VISITORS from a Japanese nuclear utility company took an unusual detour during their trip to Sellafield to spend time at the Shared Moon Garden on UCLan’s Westlakes campus.

Designs on success

cerachel 2904 University of Sunderland student Rachel Wojcik is in her thrid year of a jewellery and silversmith degree. The course is a first for the university and Rachel is only one of around eight students getting to grips with all things bling. The 21-year-old had developed an interest in art and design while at Workington Sixth Form Centre but it wasn't until much later on in her A-levels that she gained a love of jewellery designing and making.

AimHigher is a nationwide organisation that is focusing on widening participation of young people in higher education and to show that university is an option for young people when they may have thought otherwise. The key targets are areas with a traditionally low progression to university and AimHigher works to try and encourage the young people to ‘aim higher’ and essentially achieve more.
