Plans to transform a nightspot in the heart of Workington into flats have been given the go ahead.

Fusion nightclub on Ladies Walk – a late-night destination for revellers for 20 years until its closure 2010 – will be converted into nine apartments.

The flats would be a short walk from Marks & Spencer and Debenhams and the £35 million Washington Square shopping centre.

Dave Fletcher, the town centre development manager, said that the building work was good news for the town.

He said: “Any building work is a positive sign. It supports the economy from food to retail to transport.

He added that he hoped the move would boost trade in the town.

Workington MP Tony Cunningham said affordable town centre flats were “badly needed”.

The club was sold at auction but it has not been revealed who the new owner is.

Meanwhile, plans for 25 new homes at Moor Road in Stainburn have also been given the green light.
