THE ALLERDALE Y6 Multi Skill Academy was held at half term at Netherhall Community Sports Centre.
The academy is for the top performing athletes in Allerdale aged 10-11.
The most talented athletes took part in an indoor athletics competition.
The Multi Skill Academy programme was launched in 2003 to create a multi-skill environment and developing fundamental movement skills among all talented young sports people.
The programme uses a variety of approaches to help young people develop physical skills.
The Allerdale Multi Skills Academy is organised by Chris Wright, Community Sports Development Worker, with the emphasis being on improving and developing each young athlete’s individual skills.
The sessions are based on the following fundamental skills for achieving athletic potential: hand-eye coordination, balance, rhythm, speed, power, agility, accuracy and acceleration.
During the week the children also undertook modules on healthy lifestyles and psychology.
The aim of the academy is to ensure our talented young athletes are equipped with all the skills and knowledge required to achieve success and don’t specialise on one skill and one sport at this crucial time of their athletic development.
On the last day of the academy the children demonstrated their skills they had learned and improved on during the week via a group gymnastic routines.
The gym routine winners were Stuart Carruthers, Connor Pape, Emma Wise, Edward Kemp, Christina Tulley, Max Pattinson and Jessica Warren. The Sports Hall Athletics winners were Liam McNicholas, Gareth Davenport, Jonty Fish, Matthew Lister and Ewan Clarke.
The winner of the Top Gun award for females was Emily Hall (Broughton Moor Primary School) and the Top Gun for males, Stuart Carruthers (Thomlinson Junior School).
