New Millom professional Nathan Murray did the early damage with 4-25 from his first spell of 10 overs.

Workington were reduced to 46-5 and in deep trouble as Simon Bickerstaffe also claimed the wicket of stand-in pro Karl Turner, a member of the Durham Academy, was filling in for Kiwi Simon Beare.

They were rescued by new skipper Steve Benson and the experienced Simon James who put on 64 for the sixth wicket. Workington were all out for 145.

Workington quickly got rid of the dangerous Stuart Swallow and when Murray was dismissed, Millom were 48-3 and the game was nicely poised.

But opener Dominic Connor went on to carry his bat for an unbeaten 77, putting on 89 for the fourth wicket with Barney Arnold (32). Millom reached 146-4 in the 42nd over. Adam Walker was Workington’s most successful bowler with 2-26.

Haverigg beat Keswick even though they only post 133 with Keswick’s professional Dinuk Hettiarachchi taking 7-34.

But Keswick batted poorly, only Imran Khan made a decent score with 67 from Imran Khan, and they were bowled out for a disappointing 97.

Whitehaven were bowled out for 112 by Cleator who then only just managed to win, making 116-9 and Carlisle (132ao) lost to Furness (133-8).

Cockermouth struggled to a draw at Penrith where they were hanging on at 158-9 to collect eight points in total. Ian Buchanan top-scored with 51. Earlier Penrith made 180-5.

In division one Workington Seconds lost to Ulverston (125-9), making only 37 in their reply.

Wigton (189-8) beat Lannercost (101ao), Hawcoat Park (formerly BAE) beat Egremont by 71 runs and Appleby Eden (221-5) drew with Cleator Seconds (179-7)

Keswick Seconds batted as poorly as their first team and were bowled out for 89 at home to Kirkby after the visitors had only posted 150-8.

Vickerstown (107-4) beat Lindal Moor (106ao).
