Dress to be seen: Why we love Beth Ditto

Curvaceous style icon Beth Ditto is one celeb who knows how to rock plus size clothing. She’s highly esteemed in the fashion stakes with designers such as Matthew Williamson, Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney all competing to create one-off outfits for red-carpet events. Fashion aside, Beth’s influence on popular culture is phenomenal – as a lesbian, feminist, cover girl and punk hairdresser, Beth really does tick all the boxes! She’s come a long way from her impoverished roots in the Deep South, where squirrel was often served for dinner. Now, Beth rubs shoulders with the likes of Kate Moss and Yasmin Le Bon and despite her A list status still rocks her wardrobe in a daring, wild way.
Colours
The Standing in the Way of Control star is all about wearing loud colours and statement shades. From rainbow print kaftans, to orange hair, gold jackets and every tone in between, Beth isn’t afraid to dress loud. The colours seen on her outfits don’t just stop there – oh no. Beth is renowned for her audacious make up and says that as a child she was encouraged by her mum to try out lots of different products. She says, “make-up isn’t a tattoo – it all comes off at the end of the day which is why I love it. It’s fun to play and experiment.”
Prints
Beth isn’t afraid of the glitz – she’s been papped in sequins for a gorgeous beaded flapper look and has been seen in outlandish prints like clouds and trainers on dresses. With Beth, anything goes and that’s what’s so unique about her: she dares to be different and this has paid off, she’s now designing her own clothing range.
Confidence
It’s safe to say that what sets Beth apart from other celebs is her confidence. No matter the style of dress, Beth is always rocking it and flaunting those curves. Ditto believes that no matter your shape, you can look good – she wants “all the usual fashion don’ts [to] be fashion dos. Like horizontal stripes on big bodies, and chin-length hair.”
Beth’s sense of style is refreshing and dynamic and she’s an inspiration for the fuller-figured ladies among us. It’s great to see someone who knows how to put her mark on the fashion world without adhering to so-say social rules that dictate what fuller-shaped women should wear. Go Beth!
