New Bishop of Carlisle announced

THE NEW Bishop of Carlisle has been appointed.

The Queen has approved the nomination of the Right Reverend James William Scobie Newcome, the Bishop of Penrith.

Bishop James will formally take up his appointment, replacing the Right Reverend Graham Dow, at an enthronement service, which is expected to take place in the autumn.

Bishop James said: “I am delighted to be staying in Cumbria among the people whom we have come to love so much.

“I am also deeply conscious both of the privilege and responsibility of this new post.

“After seven years as Bishop of Penrith I have begun to appreciate some of the opportunities as well as the challenges of leadership in Carlisle diocese.

“As Bishop of Carlisle I will hope to be a bishop for the county as well as the Church.

“This means that I will attempt to engage with and support our farmers as well as our teachers, and our tourism industry as well as our nuclear industry.

“I will be trying to develop and deepen links with our MPs, emergency services and local government.”
