Reds up for the cups

IT’S a big cup week coming up and it would be a big let down if Reds didn’t progress in both fixtures.

First up we have Solihull tomorrow at Borough Park. I don’t know where all these home ties have come from but it’s a nice luxury to have.

Solihull have a decent away record in the league with 10 of their 16 points coming away from Damson Park but that shouldn’t be good enough to topple a Reds side that won last time out against promotion-chasing Corby.

The win was much-needed. It gave a boost to the club after a run of four games without tasting success.

It was typical Workington really. The better sides in the league normally have a rough time against this team of determined and committed players.

Droylsden is another prime example of this. The Reds put on a decent show against the league’s big boys but struggle sometimes to turn over teams in and around them in the league.

This must be down to the top sides wanting to attack, a ploy that falls right into the hand’s of Darren Edmondson’s men.

It leaves gaps at the back and Workington have the players in their armoury to punish teams when they are wide open.

Scoring still remains an issue for me though. I know we put two past an injury-hit Corby side but we need to start finishing off the chances we create.

It’s an all too familiar story but one that needs to be, and I’m assured is being, addressed.

Edmondson repeatedly says that he would be more worried if his side weren’t creating chances and he’s right. They create a lot for the front men, but at the minute it just isn’t happening for Jonny Wright and co.

Confidence plays a big part in football and I’m sure that if one or two of the strikers get a goal or two in the coming weeks then that would kick start their season.

Greystoke also visit Borough Park in the Cumberland Cup on Wednesday night. It’s a game that should be easy enough for the fringe players to win.

As Cumberland Cup holders, Edmondson wants to carry on that decent run in the cup and take the crown again.

I don’t know much about Greystoke but with the likes of Andy Hardman, Aaron Taylor and Callum Ruttledge, we have enough to get us safely into the next round.

It is important that the likes of Taylor and Hardman get a game in these competitions because they have waited around a lot this year and not seen much action.

Taylor in particular needs to play a game or two because Tony Caig won’t be around forever and someone needs to be able to step in and feel at home with the first team.

Taylor has a good pedigree and Edmondson thinks a lot of him. It’ll be good to see what he can do now because he certainly has the potential to be a good goalkeeper.
