Then and now in pictures

Have your say

Photo #7 of Brick Row, Northside particularly poignant as I lived there in the late 1960's, more or less opposite the road sign which if I remember stated it was 66 miles to Barrow!

There is one photograph there, of Upper Jane Street, which has to be really old. There is something on it that I have not seen walking around the town for many years; I think it is called a Policeman.

i so wish they had left workington as it was,i watched st johns precinct being built as i luved yards away, bring back the old buildings, especially browns, before mark taylors, browns had tubes that the cashier put the cash up and smeone sent your change back down them, briwns had a smell of old polished wood,so old worldly but fantastic,i love the old workington without all the greed

What a great set of photos. I think what make them even better, is the fact there is a then and now photo during the 60s and 70s. I remember being in the long long queue along murray road, to watch Grease.
I only just got in before closed the queue off.

I enjoyed the collection of photographs and thought about what do I miss about 'Old Workington": The Ritz cinema where the accoustics were brilliant, Toggies cafe's and the hot Vimto they sold. The accordian player who entertained shoppers on a Saturday morning with his money bag hanging off the front. Davidson and Shaws where nothing ever changed and appeared to be ageless including the two ladies who owned it. The Old Woolies and the sound of the wooden floors as we walked up to the glass fronted sweet counter; that was always finger marked by kids pointing out what they wanted, most of them mine. I wanted chocolate buttons covered in hundreds and thousands, Mother baught me Nuttals Mintoes because they "lasted longer". I still hate them sweets!!
What else do I miss; a Cloffocks that still rightfully belongs to the town's people where the Uppies and Downies can go on unhindered, and Workingtonians are free to park. A Winning Workington Town Rugby League Team, a thriving Greyhound Stadium, and a Borough Park with a roof on its Grand Stand.

I left Workington in 1968 (my maiden name was Wilson) and remember all the 'then' photos! I stumbled across Ethel's video (she speaks just like my Granma did) and loved every minute of it! Ethel refers to Cinnamons Clogs in Wilson Street being the best, Alex Cinnamon was my Grandfather...!!! After being away for 38yrs I returned to Workington in 2006 (and again every year since then) and although many changes have taken place there's still lots of places that are still the same and I treasure every moment of my return visits to Workington - no matter where I live, Workington will always be my Hometown. My next visit is planned for August 2011.
