Hunt for thug after cat shot dead on Cumbrian street

A cruel thug who shot a pet cat dead is being hunted by police.

The shooting happened on Barnett Drive in Seaton, Workington, late on Monday night or in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The cat – called Charlie – was shot through the throat by an air rifle.

Charlie’s shocked owner, Lesley Edmondson, said: “I am devastated. I just can’t believe that anyone could be so cruel.

“Charlie was only 14 months old and he was a lovely pet.

“They must have looked right at him when they shot him because it was right through his throat.”

Lesley’s boyfriend Richard Hudson found Charlie lying on the decking outside her home on Tuesday morning.

Lesley, 43, said: “When Richard found Charlie he was stone cold. We contacted the police and took him to the vets.

A post mortem showed he died after being shot by an air rifle.

“I hope that the police can catch whoever did this.”

Richard said: “Someone knows who did this because they wouldn’t have been able to keep their mouth shut.

“We suspect that whoever shot him may have been walking down the lonning at the back of our house.

“Charlie had a collar on so they would have known that he was a pet.

“We want whoever did this to be brought to justice and a prosecution made,” added Richard.

“We have got the pellet that Charlie was shot with. He was a lovely cat, something special and very intelligent.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We are reminding people not to carry air weapons in public and if anyone knows who did this, or saw anything suspicious, then they should contact police,”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101.
