Kells duo grab tries as BARLA Young Lions thrash Czechs

Kells pair Connor Holiday and Ben Milburn posted two tries each to help BARLA Great Britain Emerging Young Lions to an emphatic win over their Czech hosts.

The Lions led 50-0 at the break and eventually triumphed 68-0 against Czech Republic RL Association Under-20s, to get their tour off to a flying start.

Shaun Mumberson started the game at loose-forward and his Cockermouth team-mate Matty Henson featured off the bench, while Charlie Tomlinson, of Wath Brow, skippered the team.

The Lions opened the scoring on four minutes following quick hands out wide creating an overlap allowing Dalton’s Matty Heaton to score.

On the restart again the Lions pushed the Czech defence hard and Danny Carney latched on to Mumberson’s perfect face ball to score.

Just two minutes later Milburn broke down field to allow Matty Gee to touchdown. Winger Carney bagged his second try latching on to a Lennox Green pinpoint kick, taking the Young Lions to 20-0 on 20 minutes.

The Czech team then held their ground and pushed forward with repeat sets and strong forward play, but the Lions defence was solidly led by Mumberson with some powerful tackles that rattled the Czech forwards.

Centre Holiday bagged a brace in just nine minutes taking the score to 32-0 and Carney then completed his hat-trick.Alex Rudd raced in for the Lions to drift away to 44-0 and just before the break Milburn touched down under the sticks to bring up the half-century.

The second-half saw the Czechs lift their game and their forwards take the ball forward hard and defend well with some positive strides up-field.

But the skill levels were far too high from the Lions and second-half scores from Milburn, Will Gaunt and Reece Parker saw the tourists pull further ahead.
