Matty Robson ready to help Carlisle Utd beat Swindon

Matty Robson insists he will show no sentiment tomorrow as he bids to topple his former manager – and the man who tried to sign him in the summer.

Carlisle United winger Robson is preparing to tackle a Swindon side managed by Robson’s former Hartlepool boss Danny Wilson (Brunton Park, 3pm).

Wilson was at the helm for more than two years of Robson’s long spell with the north-east club, and came back in for the wide man when he left Victoria Park at the end of last season.

The Blues left winger – a big success story since he snubbed the Robins for Brunton Park – says he has great respect for Wilson but has no regrets about picking Carlisle as his summer destination.

“When Swindon and Danny Wilson showed interest in the summer, I did have to give it some thought,” Robson said.

“I have great respect for him and in my time at Hartlepool he was a fantastic manager.

“I sat down with my partner and it was a long thought process, but when Carlisle came in the decision was made for me.

“It would have been a long heave for us to move down to Swindon with my partner having a job up here, and for all sorts of reasons I’m happy with the decision I made.

“I’ll say ‘hello’ to Danny tomorrow but it’s nothing to do with any past relationships you’ve had, it’s about winning the game – nothing more.”

Robson is keen to help Greg Abbott’s side continue their encouraging run of form, which has seen them lose just once in their last six outings in all competitions.

A third straight home victory against the 11th-placed Robins tomorrow, and another positive result at high-flying MK Dons on Tuesday night (stadium:mk, 7.45pm) can see Abbott’s team rise to mid-table from their current position of 18th in League One.

Only an injury-time goal from Bristol Rovers’ Chris Lines in last Saturday’s 3-2 defeat prevented the Blues from extending their unbeaten run, but they bounced back with a hard-earned 1-0 win at Morecambe in Tuesday night’s FA Cup first round replay.

“After we lost at Yeovil a few weeks ago, you looked around the dressing room and everyone was deflated,” said Robson. “At Bristol Rovers, it wasn’t the same feeling. We all knew we deserved something out of the game.

“We were looking forward to the next game to get the result and we did that at Morecambe, even though we made it difficult for ourselves. It wasn’t pretty but we did the job that was required.

“Swindon will come and want to win – no team has really come to sit and defend, and they are doing well at the minute. But we’ve just got to go out and play like we can, keep a clean sheet, and we know we’ve got goals in the side. There’s no-one in this league we should fear.”

Robson has been an ever-present down the left wing since he joined the Cumbrians, and has contributed four goals so far this term.

The pacy 24-year-old says he is loving life at Brunton Park and has promised supporters he still has much more to offer.

“It’s been a while since I’ve had such a run of games, and it’s like a fresh, new me,” he said.

“It’s what I’ve needed for the last couple of years. At Hartlepool I was always there or thereabouts but never really in the centre of it all, partly down to my performances maybe, but here, playing week-in, week-out gives you a massive lift.

“If the fans think I’ve been a good signing, that’s brilliant but I’ve still got things to prove as well.

“In the last couple of games my performances haven’t been where I wanted. I’m very honest with my game and I’ll try to change that. Other than that, I would like to have had a couple more goals, but generally it’s going very well and I don’t think I could have asked for much more.

“The gaffer has put some faith in me and up to now I hope I have repaid him.”
