A schoolgirl missing from home for five days turned up at a Cumbrian police station last night.
Shannon Turnbull, 14, had not been seen since she disappeared from her home in Harriston, Aspatria, on Wednesday.
But at about midnight yesterday, she went to Workington Police Station.
Officers were speaking to her to establish where she had been.
Her worried mum had yesterday pleaded for her to come back home.
Police said they had been “extremely” concerned for her welfare.
Mum Moira Kindness said: “We just want her to come home. She has never gone away for so long. Shannon is a teenager – they take strops, but usually come back after an hour or so. We never expected this at all.”
Both Shannon’s mum and police said it was out of character for Shannon to be away for so long. The pupil of Maryport’s Netherhall School, who has connections to Carlisle and Workington, is not a frequent runaway.
As travellers left Appleby horse fair, police asked them to contact them immediately if they saw Shannon or anyone who matched her description.
Sergeant Annette McClement said: “We are extremely concerned for Shannon’s welfare. She is 14 and because of her age she is vulnerable. Staying away from home for this length of time is out of character for her and her family and police want to know that she is safe and well.”
Friends of Shannon made online appeals via Facebook for information on her whereabouts.
They posted different photos of the teenager, asking for the community’s help to track her down.
Sgt McClement added: “She has friends in the Maryport, Workington and Carlisle areas so we are appealing to anyone who sees Shannon or knows of her whereabouts to get in touch with us and encourage Shannon to do the same.”
