Organisers of next year’s Rugby League World Cup, which will see Workington host two games, have extended the deadline for people to apply for a volunteer role.

Due to the high demand from people showing an interest, a decision has been made to give others more time to also put their names forward. This must be done by August 31.

The tournament kicks off on Saturday, October 26, 2013 and will be staged in four countries with matches played in England, Wales, Ireland and France, with the final on Saturday, November 30.

Two of these games, Tonga versus Scotland and Scotland against England, will be held at Workington Town’s Derwent Park following a successful bid from Allerdale Council and the club.

Rugby League World Cup’s operations director Jon Dutton said organisers have been extremely impressed by the volume of interest for volunteer roles.

“The feelgood factor from London 2012 Olympics has been huge and volunteers there have really played their part,” he added.

“We want to ensure that people who have missed out on the Olympic and Paralympic Games, or who have been unable to volunteer, are given a chance to do so for the next global sporting event in their home town or city.”

Workington’s two matches were originally planned to be staged at the proposed Pow Beck Stadium in Whitehaven, but guarantees could not be obtained that the new stadium would be built in time.

Those who have registered will receive an application pack, containing information about the 18 roles, in September. Volunteers must be over the age of 18 as at midnight on July 1 2013.
