People with limited mobility will soon be able to enjoy the outdoors more easily thanks to the efforts of a West Cumbrian charity.

Lake District Mobility is preparing to launch its first two all-terrain mobility scooters, known as trampers, at Whinlatter and Grizedale forests.

People will be able to hire the scooter at the beauty spots for £10 a year when they sign up for a membership and complete a short safety training course with the charity.

The organisation wants to promote access for all by breaking down barriers that prevent people with limited mobility participating in the same outdoor activities as their family, friends and the wider community.

Julia Walker, founder of the charity, said: "There are only a couple of places that offer trampers in Cumbria but I know that in the South West there are 45 sites. When I realised there were very little available here I was encouraged to start the same thing."

Lake District Mobility was able to purchase the first two trampers thanks to a private donor with a passion for the Lake District who had used a similar scheme in the south of England.

And now the charity has applied for funding to the county council's local committee for Allerdale to buy another scooter to make available in the area.

It asked the council to contribute £9,324 towards the cost of a tramper and trailer.

Julia added: "The scooters are quite expensive and we lease them to businesses to take the strain off them and allow them to offer this service. The fee paid for hiring the scooters covers costs for things such as insurance and repairs. With the membership people will be able to use scooters in all the locations where we'll be making them available."
