Reviving carnival after two years was a concern but Maryport organisers had nothing to worry about.

S beautiful summer's day, large crowds and plenty of entries guaranteed the success of the Maryport Community Carnival.

Chairman Billy Pegram said there would be a committee meeting this week but he was 100 per cent sure that the carnival would be back next year, too.

Mr Pegram said there were visiting floats from Seaton and Flimby as well as plenty of entries from the town's clubs and pubs.

Breath-taking demonstrations of the Chee Force Knights cheerleading team gave them the top prize of best entry in the carnival.

Mr Pegram said there was surprisingly little to do with the Queen's platinum jubilee but it was obvious that Maryport people were keeping up with the news.

One of the most topical floats, from the Thomas Henry Pub, was calling for Del Trotter for Prime Minister. The pub was awarded the prize for best entertainment on the route.

Mr Pegram said: "People were not given much time to prepare this year, but I am glad we went ahead with the carnival. We had our visiting floats but maybe next year there will be more local floats with the traditional carnial queens," he said.
