Two young sporting stars from Workington have excelled in a mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament with both boys winning their fights. 

Tom Johnston, 16, and Ryan Dobinson, 17, both train at Tapout Knockout MMA and Jujitsu Club in Workington and are excelling as athletes. 

Over the weekend the pair went along to compete at the BMF MMA show in Barnsley Metrodome.

Tapout Knockout Head Coach Trevor Cunningham was very pleased with their performance and said "hard training equals success". He went onto say that he believes the boy have a bright future in the sport. 

Tom was co-main event on the junior card whilst whilst Ryan fought in the amatuer card lineup. 

Tom is currently a member of the British MMA squad, he is 3-0 in youth MMA and British & World WKU kickboxing champion. He is also British and European Ju-Jitsu champion. 

Ryan Dobinson is now 3-1 at amateur MMA, World Brazilian Ju-Jitsu champion and a member of the English MMA squad. 

Rikki Dobinson, Ryan's Dad, said: "What can I say, proud dad is a massive understatement well done Ryan and a massive thanks to all coaches and training partners, we couldn't do it without you.

"I'd like to give a big shout out to Trevor Cunningham and the man who is beside my son all the time Thomas Johnson, it's your turn now and I can't wait to see you in action. 

"Again thank you to Kyle Barlow of West Lakes Demolition and Keith Hunter of CM Sacaffolding we couldn't do it without you."

Frank Johnston, Tom's dad, also praised the hard work work and commitment of both young men. 

He explained that Tom has been competing in various forms of martial arts since he was eight years old whilst Ryan began training at age ten. 

Tom has won competitions in both Greece and Germany and both him and Ryan have won Ju-Jitsu competitions on an international level. 

Frank explained that both boys were back in the gym the next day to continue with their training.
