FLOOD works will continue in Flimby as part of a £1.5m investment, closing part of the A596 for up to five weeks.

The works will commence on Tuesday, April 11, closing the A596 immediately south of Flimby village, for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Construction works will be completed by local contractor Cubby Construction Ltd, on behalf of Cumbria County Council.

The closure follows after previous resurfacing works already closed part of the road back in February.

So far, the flood alleviation programme has successfully completed the following works; diversion of peak flows from Penny Gill to Furnace Gill; remediation to an existing flood gate adjacent to the A596; upgrading the surface water drainage systems at Coniston Avenue and the construction of additional dams to the East of Flimby.

A spokesperson from Cumbria County Council said: "Cumbria County Council would like to thank the community for their continued support and patience while these flood alleviation improvements are made and apologise for any inconvenience caused."
