UPPIES and Downies is back today, in the second game of the 2023 series.

Downies are coming back from a defeat on Good Friday as Uppies secured the victory.

Leon Dymatrowski hailed the ball last week with a brave run to Workington Hall, whilst being injuried. Thus meaning that the Downies have everything to play for as they try to level the score.

The Easter tradition of Uppies and Downies in Workington is a long standing one. The modern tradition began some time in the latter half of the 19th century. The series are played over Good Friday, the following Tuesday and the following Saturday.

The ball which is specially-made for the series starts at Cloffocks at 6.30pm where it is first thrown, and then Uppies have to get the ball to Workington Hall and Downies have to get to the harbour to hail the ball.

Today at 6pm, before the ball is thrown, a vicar will be blessing a plaque which commemorates the four players who have died during play. George Young died in 1828, Chris Smith died in 1882, John Johnstone died in 1932 and Robert Storey died in 1983.

The BBC are prediciting rain at a 90 per cent chance at 6pm onwards tonight, meaning those taking part and spectating should expect to get wet.

Lifelong Uppie Elvin Jarvis, said last week: "We are really looking forward to the game this year."

"It brings the town together competing for the bragging rights and with Easter being late again this year it should hopefully be warming up."

"Unfortunately there is no charity campaign this year with the current financial burden but hopefully we will have something lined up for next year."
