A school in the area has recently received funding to create a sensory garden in its playground.

St Michaels Infant School in Workington can now let their pupils enjoy the area where they can relax, play with their friends, talk to teachers, and also take part in fun activities like growing plants.

Wendy White an assistant at the school has helped to create the space with the help of a community grant from Allerdale Borough Council.

Several companies have also gotten involved along with parents to help to make the space as nice as possible for the children.

One parent, who is an artist, has created Peter Rabbit artwork inspired by the stories of Beatrix Potter, giving the space the theme of Mr. Mcgregor's garden and giving the children a chance to learn about literature.

Candice Reagan, the headteacher, has been fully supportive of the project, she said: "It's been important for me to promote good mental health in our children.

"Thanks to that Wendy White, one of our senior teaching assistants, has been working with the children to create a sensory garden.

"It is very much the children's project, we've had a gardening club that we did over a period of six weeks as an after-school club.

She continued: "The children really enjoy this they're using the garden every play and lunchtime, growing vegetables and fruit, and we've been donated trees. We're just trying to add that softer touch to our school.

"A lot of the children who come from the nearby houses don't have gardens so they're not able to plant."

Wendy White said: "We use it on our Feel-good Fridays, we've been offering to do the fairy gardens and asking what they'd like to make.

"It takes a lot of maintaining so they are in charge of watering the plants and doing what they need to help them grow."

Carley, a pupil at the school, said: "I love the garden and I enjoy spending time out here."

Hayden, a pupil who was involved with the after-school gardening club, said: "We grew tomatoes, we're growing potatoes and lots of other vegetables and I like planting flowers, it makes me feel happy to see them grow."
