A little rain and a stiff breeze did not stop Flimby Children's Carnival on Saturday.

Picnic baskets were still laid out on the field and the only concession to the weather was that the entertainment trailer was moved to the other side of the Flimby rugby field out of the way of the wind.

Flimby Carnival has a real village feel about it. This could be summed up in the fact that the Ivy Queen, Lyla Markham, and Gyupsy Queen, Ebony Steel, are best friends and got dressed together for the big day with no thought of the competition ahead.

In fact, the Ivy Queen won first prize and best overall float while the Gypsy Queen came a close second.

Lyla's grandmother and one fo the carnival organisers said: "I think that just shows the spirit of this carnival. There was no sense of rivalry, just excitement."

Flimby tries to keep costs down. One way of doing this is to sell wristbands for an affordable £3 each which gives children sfree access to a number of attractions.

"We gave out 300 bands this year and 120 goodie bags."

She said carnival participants also got medals: "Again, we have out 120 medals but discovered we were short. Every child has been promised that they will receive on, however."

After the carnival procession, the entertainment started don the field which included live music from Solomon and Stella.

A scarecrow competition run in conjunction with the carnival saw 24 strangers popping up around the village.

Sarah Thomas' Flimby Ahoy won first place with Gingy the Gingerbread man in second place and Peter Rabbit third.
