Anyone who knits, or crochets is being asked to get busy making poppies for a very special project.

The aim is to create a ribbon of poppies from the top of one of Maryport's most iconic buildings, in time fr Remembrance Sunday.

Linda Radcliffe, a lay reader at St Mary's Church on Netherhall corner, said retired vicar, the Rev Susan McKendrey had shared a wish to see poppies draped from the tower of the church to the ground.

Linda said: "She shared the idea with Reflections, the group which helps those affected with dementia and their families."

The group has now decided to try and make the vision a reality in time for this year's Remembrance Sunday on November 12.

"Reflections members have begun to craft poppies through crochet, knitting and sewing. But if we are to realize Rev. Susann’s dream, we need the local community to help us reach the goal of creating enough poppies in time for the Civic Service.

"We know Maryport people are amazing and generous; so if you can find some Red wool or felt for the poppies, and black for the poppy middles. please join us in either knitting, crocheting or sewing some poppies to be part of this we would be very grateful."

Linda added: "It would be great to see Susan's dream come true after all she gave to the community as Parish priest."

The group has easy-to-follow patterns for the poppies. Anyone willing to help should contact Linda Radcliffe at lynrad@hotmail.co.uk
