TWO sisters from Workington are taking part in a skydive to raise funds in honour of an six year old boy who is fighting leukaemia.

Megan and Rebecca Burgess from Workington have decided to take on a skydive in honour of Rebecca’s fiancé's nephew, who is currently in and out of hospital fighting T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Thomas was diagnosed with the condition aged 6. He spent a week in the paediatric intensive care unit due to a large mass on his chest meaning he needed help with his breathing.

The six-year-old lives with his parents in Stalmine Poulton-le-Flyde, however has strong family connections to Workington.

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is a rare type of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow.

Following his diagnosis, Thomas spent five weeks on the oncology ward receiving intensive steroid treatment and chemotherapy.

Thomas' treatment will take a total of three years and he will be in and out of hospital due to being immuno-compromised, which makes it difficult for his little body to fight infections.

He will also require regular blood transfusions and platelets alongside his chemotherapy.

Thomas and his sister Lucy, aged 8, ‘really want’ to raise money for Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group (CCLG), a national charity that fund and support pioneering research to find better, faster and kinder treatments for children.

The Burgess sisters have said they are aiming to support the charity behind Thomas’ care, saying no child should ever have to fight such an awful illness.

Speaking about the skydive, Megan Burgess said: “Me and my sister wanted to do a sponsored skydive dive for her fiancé's nephew to help support the charity behind his care.

“He is only 6 years old, dealing with something no child ever should and sadly so many more children are on the same journey.”

The sisters are aiming to raise £1,000 to support the vital charity, with donations being accepted through the Go Fund me page they have set up, you can donate to the page here.
