YOUNG primary school pupils from across Cumbria joined together for a sporting day of competition and camaraderie.

Cumbria Education Trust (CET) held a Year Two Multi-Skills Festival at Workington Academy, bringing together 10 primary schools for a day of energy and fun.

The event showcased a diverse array of sports and activities, including bench ball, trampolining, ball skills, an obstacle course, yoga and dance.

Carlisle primary schools, Caldew Lea, Castle Carrock, Newtown, Petteril Bank and Yewdale joined Workington’s Northside, Whitehaven’s Hensingham, Tebay and Yanwath from Eden, and Longtown to enjoy a day of activities.

They split into teams and took turns on each of the sports stations where they were assisted by 26 of CET’s Sports Leaders from its secondary schools, The Whitehaven Academy, William Howard School and Workington Academy.

Activities took place in the main hall and drama studio as well as on the school’s AstroTurf pitch. Highlights included the trampolining event, where young participants learnt how to do different jumps and turns while promoting balance, coordination, and core strength.

Out on the AstroTurf, students manoeuvred through an obstacle course, testing their agility, speed, and problem-solving skill. In the drama studio, the yoga session allowed the children to unwind and engage in mindfulness exercises.

Pupils young and older were united in their enthusiasm for the day.

Imogen, from Longtown Primary School, said: “I enjoyed the trampolining as we learned some new skills. My favourite jump was the straddle because I was very good at it.”

Maisie, a sports leader from The Whitehaven Academy, said: “I enjoyed watching the kids being happy with their friends and teaching them a thing or two.”

CET is Cumbria’s largest multi academy trust and regularly brings pupils and students together from across its primary and secondary schools to enjoy new experiences and make new friends.

“Thank you to all of the schools for participating, our sports leaders for working so hard and Workington Academy for hosting the event.”
