A GROUP of canoeists were saved after one capsized in rough weather.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) was called at 7pm on Friday after receiving a distress call from a group of five canoeists.

Five people in two canoes were on their way to St Herbert's Island on Derwentwater when one canoe, carrying three individuals, capsized due to the rough weather.

One person was able to save themselves and attempted to assist the other two struggling in the water.

The occupants of the other canoe managed to reach St Herbert's Island where they contacted the rescue services.

The MRT dispatched a rescue boat from Derwentwater Marina.

Post rescue of the first group, the boat continued its operations by collecting the remaining two individuals from the island before returning all five people to Keswick's shores.

One of the rescuees is said to have suffered from mild hypothermia and required examination from paramedics.

A spokesperson from Keswick MRT said: "Many thanks to the Keswick Launch Company who recovered the canoes and equipment that had been left behind.

"Also thanks to Denton House Hostel who kindly provided accommodation to the five at very short notice."

Whilst the rescue was ongoing, reports came in of the unattended paddleboard around Friar’s Crag.

The paddleboard was reported to have the ankle leash snapped from it.

"The five from the canoe rescue advised that it did not belong to them but they had seen it earlier near to St Herbert’s Island," Keswick MRT said.

"A search of the lake and lakeshore was initiated with the various agencies already present including the coastguard helicopter.

"At 10pm, the various teams stood down.

"The owner of the paddleboard remains unresolved."

Nathan Major, station officer for Whitehaven Coastguard, said: "This paddleboard incident shows the importance of people taking to the water needing to ensure their kit and equipment is adequately labelled with the owners contact information.

"Ahead of the finer weather coming, we would encourage all water users to please take the time now to label their equipment, meaning a swift closure to any future incidents of this nature."

If you have any information on the paddleboard, you are urged to call Cumbria Police on 101 quoting log number 215 of April 12, 2024.
