Cumberland Council is urging parents of children starting school in September to apply early for school transport.
The application deadline for home to school transportation is Friday, May 31.
The council provides free transport for pupils aged up to eight years old who are more than two miles from their nearest qualifying school.
It also provides free transport for pupils aged eight and above who are more than three miles away.
Children from low-income families, who receive free school meals and uniform vouchers, or families who qualify for Working Tax Credit or Universal Credit at the maximum level, may also be entitled to transport support.
Applications received after May 31 may not be processed before September.
