A LAKE District hotel has had a seven figure sum renovation, with its manager saying they are 'delighted' with the final results.

The transformation was undertaken by the Borrowdale Gates Hotel team alongside hotel management company, Providence Hotels, and upgraded the property including refreshing all of its central areas plus all 32 rooms and suites.

The four silver star retreat, which also has two AA Rosettes for its restaurant, is located in the 'jaws' of the Borrowdale Valley.

The Borrowdale Gates Hotel remained open throughout the works, which were completed in phases and managed by management company Providence Hotels, for guests to continue to enjoy stays without interruption.

Originally a magnificent private residence, the Borrowdale Gates opened as a hotel in 1866 and seeks to maintain the homely atmosphere of a genuine country house.

Carefully modernised, it has a look inspired by its outdoors environment that aims to be 'welcoming rather than over-designed'.

Sue Willan, general manager, said: “We’re delighted to be showcasing the final results of our refurbishment which has transformed the guest experience at Borrowdale Gates Hotel.

“From the outset, our goal was to create a small slice of understated luxury that reflects the stunning natural backdrop of the Lake District, and complements the superb, locally sourced menu in our restaurant and the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere our team creates for guests during their stay.

“The local area has so much to offer visitors of all ages. Alfred Wainwright, renowned fell walker and writer, once wrote that the nearby Castle Crag is the ‘loveliest square mile in the Lake District’.

“Whether guests are looking for a peaceful escape, the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and the many scenic walks on our doorstep, or an activity-led break and our new look country house hotel is the perfect base.”

Dagmar Jungbauer, director of operations at Providence Hotels, said: “Maintaining operations while undergoing the refurbishment was no small feat, but we wanted to ensure guests could still enjoy the comfort and hospitality they’ve come to expect from the Borrowdale Gates Hotel.”

Danie Bester, group facilities manager at Providence Hotels, added: “This monumental endeavour marks a significant milestone for the Borrowdale Gates Hotel, reflecting its unwavering commitment to providing an unparalleled guest experience.

“I worked closely with Sue, Dagmar and our interior designer to create spaces that embody warmth, elegance and modernity and that connect with our guests on a personal level, offering a destination they can feel truly at home in.”
