Mental health social workers in Cumberland have embarked on a two-week strike demanding job reevaluation.

Starting from yesterday (April 24) to May 8, this industrial action marks the third instance of action by the urgent care team.

They previously held two strikes in March, including one lasting 72 hours.

The team works round the clock, handling rapid responses and immediate detention decisions across Cumbria.

Fran Robson, the GMB Organiser, criticised the council's handling of the issue.

"For too long, Cumberland council has ignored their tireless efforts and denied them the recognition they deserve.

"Our members are left with no choice but to escalate their dispute.

"It's high time that Cumberland council recognises our members' worth and allows fair regrading of their role."

More than 2,500 members of the public have signed a petition in support of the urgent care team, according to the GMB Union.

However, the council maintains their stance, stating that the role of AMHPs in the Urgent Care Team had been regraded in 2019, following an internal review process involving trade unions.

As per the council's pay scale, members of the Urgent Care team earn between £48,474 and £49,498.

The council has assured emergency coverage during the strike and is working with the NHS to ensure continuity of support.
