A family-run residential care home in Workington has completed an expansion, creating at least 40 jobs.

The Fairways opened the doors to an additional 28 rooms on Monday, as well as a hairdressing salon, function room, bar and sunroom.

P&C Residential Services Ltd, which also owns Westwinds, at Harrington, is run by sisters-in-law Paula Carruthers and Cathy Keough.

The 40 new employees will be needed to work in the home's care, catering and domestic services teams.

Mrs Carruthers said: "Our aim has always been to care and support people as we ourselves would like to be cared for.

"Fairways is a place which in the not too distant future I myself would be delighted to live in. It's lively, fun and totally person centred."

The family link runs throughout the home, with the two directors giving the new function room a special name.

"Our function room - Eileen's - is named after my late mother who was passionate about the services Cathy and I developed," said Mrs Carruthers.

"She liked having fun with her family and friends and she would have loved the new place."

The residential services company took over The Fairways three years ago, and, through a phased development, have now opened it to its full capacity of 54 beds. The home caters for residents over 65 years.

Alongside the new facilities, the sisters-in-law have also appointed a new two rosette chef, Graham Evans.

"Having Graham on board will take us to a different level with our catering, food is such an important part of all our lives and a crucial part of people's health and well being," said Mrs Keough.

Last year, The Fairways was rated "good" in its first inspection since opening. The Branthwaite Road home was inspected by the Care Quality Commission, in May 2016, and was found to be safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.
