A £900,000 scheme to improve the roads leading to Whitehaven's West Cumberland Hospital will start later this year.

Cumbria Highways will carry out the major reconstruction work to improve the condition and road safety of Homewood Road and Overend Road.

The work, between the A595 hospital roundabout and the B5295 Cleator Moor Road, will be carried out using phased road closures in order to complete the works as efficiently as possible.

Work is expected to take eight to 10 weeks to complete and staff will be on site 12 hour days, seven days a week.

The work is scheduled to take place during school summer holidays, in July.

Officers from Cumbria Highways have met with staff from the hospital and Ambulance Service, and will be talking to other interested parties over the coming weeks.

A county council spokesman said: "This engagement aims to confirm arrangements for access and to ensure that all staff, patients and local residents and businesses are aware of the project and the inevitable short term disruption."

Access to the hospital for emergency vehicles will be maintained throughout the works.
