North Cumbria's A&E departments are continuing to perform above the national average, despite waiting times still not hitting Government targets.
The trust that runs the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven and Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle is now ranked 45th out of 138 in England for its emergency performance.
The national standard is that 95 per cent of A&E patients should be seen, treated, admitted or discharged in under four hours.
But very few trusts are currently meeting the target, with latest figures showing the national average was 84.6 per cent in May.
North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust's overall performance was above this level, standing at 89.8 per cent.
It was the 16th month in a row that the trust had been above average.
During May, the two local A&E departments had 7,696 attendances, seeing more than 10 people every hour.
Stephen Eames, chief executive, said their priority is to progress to 95 per cent.
“The trust is consistently performing above average in its A&E departments and this is a real testament to the continued hard work our staff put in day in, day out in order to provide patients with timely access to care," he added.
