AN ACTING headteacher is in place at St Benedict's Catholic High School, it has been confirmed.

A spokesman for Cumbria County Council said the Whitehaven school's headteacher Ian Smith is "currently absent".

One of Mr Smith's assistants, Steve Bridgman, has taken on the role of acting headteacher.

In September, teachers at the school voted in favour of strike action amid concerns over a "toxic atmosphere" in the school and "a culture of fear and intimidation".

A council statement said: "The headteacher of St Benedict's is currently absent.

"Mr Steve Bridgman has been appointed as acting headteacher, supported by the school's governors and staff, and the senior leadership team.

"The council and diocese are working closely with the school to provide support as required, with the well-being of pupils and the provision of a stimulating learning environment the council's top priority."

Headteachers at St Benedict's are appointed and employed by the Diocese of Lancaster Education Service.

Last month, National Education Union (NEU) members carried out a formal ballot, with 93 per cent of members, from a 92 per cent turnout, backing a walk-out.

Members have previously called for the suspension of Mr Smith while an investigation was completed.

Speaking at the time, NEU regional officer Paul Noble said: "This result was never in any doubt, members at St Benedict's have had enough.

"Membership of the union has increased since the start of the dispute as staff are keen to stand up.

"We hope it is clear to the headteacher and governing body that the members are united and want action to be taken to end the culture of 'fear and intimidation' the members have raised in our stress and bullying audit.

"We do not take strike action lightly and will only use it as a last resort. We hope a resolution can be found swiftly for the benefit of the community."
