An art project celebrating the contribution of women to Cumbrian society will be held in Cockermouth.

Two one-day textiles workshops will be held this month, at the Kirkgate Centre.

Called This Hand: Toil and Triumph, the free workshops have been organised by Lakes Alive and will be exploring the work of women from miner Sal Madge to the suffragists.

Participants - aged 15 and older - will find out about the county’s famous female characters and then design and create a glove that celebrates women’s achievements. These will form part of a countywide display at Lakes Alive in Kendal in September.

The workshops will be held from 10am to 4pm on Friday, August 17 (planning and designing) and Friday, August 31 (creating and completing).

They will be lead by textile artist Janice Murray.

"You don’t have to be an expert stitcher to come and join in and I’m excited to see how I help people turn their ideas for an original glove design into a reality," said Janice.

"The gloves can be made from scratch, or recycled, say from gardening, work or fashion and we will build them into unique pieces of art."

Holly Goodfellow, of Lakes Alive, said: "This is a really exciting and special opportunity for people to celebrate someone who means something to them. The subject can be historical or contemporary; famous or family, as long as they are women and as long as they live, or lived, in Cumbria."
