A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 34-year-old man was stabbed in Maryport.

Police said they were called out at around 12.25am after a report of a serious assault on Senhouse Street.

The victim was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, where, police say, he remains in a critical condition.

Police remain at the scene this afternoon, 16 hours after the incident.

An entire block of Senhouse Street, remains cordoned off and businesses have been unable to open.

Irish Street, from behind the Wave Centre to Riverside Rest Home is also cordoned off and traffic has been diverted around the harbour.

There are no road closures.

It is not known when the cordons will be removed.

A 32-year-old man from Carlisle has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
