A campaign has been set up to tackle period poverty in West Cumbria.

USDAW, Union of shop workers distribution and associated workers, has teamed up with Workington Rotary Club, Inspira and Workington's Tesco to collect sanitary products for pupils at Workington Academy and the town's St Joseph's school and the local foodbank.

The Rotary club has donated red wheelie bins, which shoppers can fill with sanitary products to be donated.

The campaign was launched last week and the shop ran out of feminine hygiene products due to so many donations.

Steven McGregor, organising officer for USDAW, said: "It was fantastic. People if Workington have been so generous - it's unbelievable. We can't thank people enough. When the two wheelie bins had been filled, people started giving cash donations. We raised £109 which will be used to buy sanitary products to be given to the two school and the foodbank."

He added shoppers' feedback had been amazing, with people commenting sanitary products should not be a luxury items.

He said: "Why should women and girls have to make a decision on whether to buy food or products? It's just wrong."

People are being encouraged to donated the products when they shop at the store.
