There will be a full day of fun in Keswick next month as the Tour of Britain comes to Cumbria.

While the race and its entourage are expected to pass through the town within 40 minutes on September 5, people will be able to watch the action on a big screen in Market Square.

The screen will show the live coverage of the Cumbrian stage of the tour and the highlights programme in the evening.

A family film screening is also planned, with other activities taking place during the day.

The 269sq ft screen and activities have been organised by Keswick Tourism Association working with Keswick Bikes, Rather Be Cycling, Whinlatter Forest Visitor Centre, Allerdale council and Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership.

Stage Two of Britain’s biggest professional cycle race is set to pass through Keswick on its journey from Carlisle to Kendal in the Cumbrian stage.

After skirting Bassenthwaite Lake on the B5291, the riders are expected to arrive in Cockermouth around 1.35pm for a sprint through the town centre.

The first King of the Mountain climb will take place at Whinlatter Pass at 1.54pm.

The ride will then pass through Keswick, leaving the town via Chestnut Hill where a second King of the Mountains challenge will take place.

Their route then takes them down the western side of Thirlmere, rejoining the A591 to take in the newly-rebuilt section at Dunmail Raise.

Rio Olympic medallists Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish are just two of the big names lined up to take part.

Organisers have confirmed 17 of the 20 World Tour teams who will be competing in this year’s Tour of Britain, including Team Sky.

One of its members is Tour de France winner and Olympian Chris Froome, although it has not been confirmed if he is taking part.

Vanessa Metcalfe, tourism manager for Keswick Tourism Association, said: “We are expecting a real party atmosphere.

“Anyone thinking of coming to see the Cumbrian stage will be well placed to see the action by coming to Keswick where you’ll be able to see your cycling heroes in the flesh, then settle down and watch the rest of the stage on our massive television screen.”

The tourism association hopes to recreate the atmosphere and fun enjoyed in the town when the tour last passed through in 2013.

Last year’s event saw a stage begin in Cockermouth and travel through Maryport and Silloth.
