HUNDREDS have turned out to support the traditional Boxing Day hunts across Cumbria.

Around 60 60 people flocked to Welton Farm, in Welton near Dalston, to support one of the most popular days in the hunting calendar.

It was the first time for Lee Peters leading out Cumberland Farmers' Foxhounds Boxing Day hunt.

"I'm looking forward to it," Lee said. "I think the weather may be putting a few off because it's cold and windy but we think it'll be a good turnout."

After sounding his horn to mark the start of the hunt, Lee said: "We must thank all the landowners and everyone who has turned out."

He also warned riders: "Conditions are seriously wet out there so bear that in mind."

Elsewhere, around 25 people braved the conditions to head out with the Melbreak Foxhounds.

Low Lorton publican Mark Cockbain served hunt enthusiasts drinks before the meet got underway from the Wheatsheaf.

Other hunts today have included the Cumberland Foxhounds, which left from the Snooty Fox at Uldale, and the Blencathra Foxhounds.

Keswick town centre was a throng of people as hundreds turned out to see the Blencathra's Boxing Day hunt get underway.

Mulled wine was laid on by the King's Arms.

Michael Thompson, joint master of the Blencathra Foxhounds, said: "It was an exceptionally good turnout in the Market Square."

He added: "The Boxing Day hunt is a time honoured tradition and that doesn't seem to change."
