While everyone else is snuggled up in their winter woollies, a Cockermouth teenager will be swimming across lots of lakes as part of a fundraising challenge.

Josh Stannett, 16, wanted to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, in memory of his grandmother.

He's no stranger to challenges and thought that swimming 13 lakes would fit the fundraising bill.

He started this month with Crummock and Loweswater. He hopes to swim every week, completing his challenge on February 1.

"I do lots of swimming in the lakes, I like that kind of thing," said Josh, who is in the sixth form at Cockermouth School.

"I have always wanted to swim lots of the lake and am always up for a challenge. I cycled the C2C when I was 10."

Wearing a wetsuit, skull cap and thermal shoes, he will be accompanied by one of his parents in a kayak.

His mother, AJ, works in insurance, and dad, Phil, is a fire fighter and station manager.

"The cold will be challenging but I reckon I'm up to it," said Josh.

"It's to raise money for cancer research and also in memory of my grandmother, Mary Watling, who lived in Leeds and died nine years ago."

In the coming months, Josh will swim Buttermere, Rydal Water, Ennerdale, Derwentwater, Wastwater, Thirlmere, Bassenthwaite, Coniston Water, Haweswater, Ullswater and Windermere.

"I've swum lots in Crummock, Loweswater, Buttermere and Windermere, I've not been in Ullswater, Wastwater or Coniston before so am looking forward to that," said Josh.
