A theatre is appealing for volunteers to help it deliver its programme of events and shows.

The Carnegie Theatre, on Finkle Street in Workington, is calling for people to join its team to work on a number of roles including the box office, stewarding shows and provide support in marketing, maintenance, technical support and admin.

Karen Thompson, theatre manager, said: “We have a lively and friendly team of local volunteers without whom we couldn’t deliver the events we do.

“As the programme develops and grows we need more local people to come and get involved.

“It’s a fantastic way to meet new people, see the shows we deliver and help in maintaining this jewel in West Cumbria’s crown.”

The Carnegie was managed by Allerdale Council until 2015 when it was handed over to the specially created Carnegie Theatre Trust, which now manages the venue.

“All the trustee/directors are volunteers and come from local businesses, user groups and interested parties and work tirelessly to ensure the venue is sustainable and in great condition for future generations,” Ms Thompson added.

The venue, which has seen more than £200,000 of improvements in the past three years, was nominated Venue of the Year 2017 and its volunteers also received awards for their service.

Ms Thompson said: “We’re looking for people who have time on their hands and would like to get involved.

“From poster distribution to selling popcorn, tearing tickets to advising customers, assisting with fundraising to unloading an incoming show, there is no shortage of work to be done here and the volunteers’ contribution to this building is incalculable – we simply couldn’t exist without them.

“What’s more the team here are just lovely – there’s always fun to be had even when working hard.”
