CONTROLLED explosions are continuing at Sellafield today following the discovery of redundant chemicals in a laboratory.

Bomb disposal experts have been working on and off at the nuclear plant since last weekend after the industrial solvents needing safe disposal were found.

A spokesman said work to safely and successfully dispose of the chemicals would continue today.

The spokesman added: "The disposals will take place during daylight hours and may be audible off-site. We have provided updates directly to staff and stakeholders in the immediate vicinity of the site."

The Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team is carrying out the work.

The Sellafield site is operating as normal, with the exception of the analytical laboratory from which the chemicals were retrieved.
