Cricket legends Mark Ramprakash, Graham Onions and Steve Harmison will be among those to take to the field in a Twenty20 clash against Cockermouth today.

Cockermouth will play the PCA England Masters at Sandair, with the opposition side to also include Warren Hegg, Mal Loye, Alex Tudor, Owais Shah, Richard Blakey, Ajmal Shahzad and two other as yet unannounced players.

The Masters will be captained by Ramprakash, who was one of the most successful county batters ever and bowed out with 35,659 first-class runs, although he failed to replicate that kind of form in the 52 Tests he appeared in over 11 years.

The event has been organised by England cricketer Ben Stokes, who is unable to play in the match but will be attending as guest of honour, to give something back to the area.

Stokes spent his formative years playing for Cockermouth Cricket Club.

The day will also see local youngsters from teams including Wigton, Workington and Penrith play exhibition matches from 10am and there will be coaching, a champagne reception and question-and-answer sessions with the stars.

The match between Cockermouth and the PCA England Masters will begin at 3.30pm.

Cockermouth Cricket Club spokesman Gareth White said: “There are some good names in there, it’s an exciting line-up.

“Mark Ramprakash is my personal hero.

“All the lads are hugely excited about it. It’s huge for the local community because we’ve harnessed eight junior clubs for a tournament in the morning.

“One of the aims of this is that we want it to be a real legacy for cricket.

“Ben was really keen to have that.

“He wanted it to be a day about cricket with Cockermouth at the heart of it.

“He’s very busy and moves around a lot but he always stays in touch and has never forgotten where he came from.”

Tickets for the event, including corporate tables and general admission, are still available for the game in advance from Cockermouth Travel, Leslie Cleeland Ltd, The Castle Bar, The Globe Hotel and Cockermouth Cricket Club at £10 for adults and £5 for children.

On the day admission will be £12.50 for adults and £7.50 for children. Spectators can park for free at The Fitz.
