A Cumbrian gin has made it to the top of the world - well almost.

Arctic adventurer Alan Chambers recently trekked to the North Pole, where he paused to enjoy the tipple on ice.

Explorer Gin is made by the Lakes Distillery at its Setmurthy site, near Bassenthwaite Lake.

Mr Chambers is a former Royal Marine commando and an experienced explorer. In 2000, he was the first British explorer to reach the North Pole unsupported.

He has also traversed the length of Iceland by ski, led groups in an Ultra Arctic Challenge across the Yukon and highlighted climate change in a trek across Greenland.

Mr Chambers has also since completed the North Pole expedition no fewer than 12 more times.

The Lakes Distillery met the explorer at a motoring event for which they'd supplied drinks.

A spokeswoman for the company said: "Alan loved our products and it seemed naturally fitting that he takes the Explorer gin on his travels.

"We like to recommend the Explorer Gin be drank neat on ice - but this was on another level entirely."

Mr Chambers said it “tasted great” in the -40 degree temperatures, but added that it was “seriously lovely” to get in some warmth in those extremes.
