An evil sexual predator has been jailed for life after admitting the rape and indecent assault of boys and girls aged as young as nine.

Described by one of his victims as "a dirty monster", Arthur Warwick, 58, formerly of Roundthorn near Penrith, was sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court today.

He admitted 29 separate sexual offences, including five counts of raping children as young as nine; 11 counts of indecent assault on children aged nine to 15; the attempted rape of a nine-year-old child; three counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity; possession of indecent images of children; and three counts of making indecent images.

Warwick's victims, three boys and one girl, were abused over a period dating back to 1975.

Earlier this year he had admitted attempting to meet a child in Whitehaven following sexual grooming after being arrested as part of a police sting.

The court heard Warwick offered sweets and cigarettes to the children as "inducements". He also issued threats to ensure his abuse was not disclosed.

Moving statements provided by the four victims detailed the profound impact caused by Warwick.

Sentencing him, Judge Peter Davies told Warwick he was a "sexual predator", and added: "The harm you have caused is incalculable."

Warwick must serve a minimum of 13 years before he will be considered for release by the parole board.

But the judge stressed: "Mr Warwick, you may never be released."

Detective Chief Inspector David Pattinson said: “I am pleased to see that justice has been served and that Warwick will be going away for a very long time for his despicable actions.

“Warwick consistently committed child sex offences for a period spanning over 40 years. His actions were truly evil and he has left a number of people scarred for life.

"He would gain the trust of the victim’s parents and then isolate his victims so they felt unable to speak out about what was happening to them.

“Throughout his interviews Warwick would remain silent as questions were put to him. He may have pleaded guilty to the offences but whether he has any remorse is very questionable."

Det Ch Insp Pattinson praised Warwick's victims for their bravery and faith in the police, telling them "Cumbria is a safer place with such a monster behind bars".
