People across Cumbria have been showing their support for members of the armed forces today.

Armed Forces Day, which takes place on the last Saturday in June, is an opportunity for members of the public to say thank you to current servicemen and women, veterans, their families, cadets and the charities that support those who have served.

A full day of events has been taking place in the heart of Carlisle, with army, sea and air cadets all taking part in a drill competition, while a parade was also held this afternoon.

Stalls from a range of charities and armed forces division were also set up to help people gain a greater understanding of the work undertaken.

Meanwhile in Workington, a parade took place through the town this morning, before stopping at the war memorial in the park for a Drumhead service at 11am.

It was followed by a march back to the Royal British Legion Club for lunch, followed by an afternoon of activities, band displays, cadets displays and an afternoon tea dance.

Tony Parrini, secretary of the the Carlisle and Stanwix Royal British Legion branch, helped to organise the event.

He said he was pleaded with the turnout in the city.

"It's an opportunity for people to see the work that the armed forces do," he said. "It's also a chance for the public to say thank you to the armed forces for helping to protect our country.

"We've got stalls where people can take to serving personnel and veterans and find out a bit more, as well as make donations to the charities if they wish."
