Two bridges which closed during last week's floods have now reopened.

Kersey Bridge, between Beckermet and St Bees, and Egremont Bridge were opened by the county council earlier this afternoon.

It will come as welcome news to the thousands of motorists who have faced days of tailbacks as all traffic has been forced to use the busy A595.

The closure of the bridges has caused much disruption across West Cumbria.

Schoolchildren living on the south side of Egremont Bridge have been walking to West lakes Academy, in the town centre, along the busy bypass. And businesses on the south side, have also reported a loss in trade.

The county council, which is responsible for the bridges, had to wait until the weather improved before inspections could take place.
