A man was flown to hospital after an incident on a west Cumbrian street.

The air ambulance, police and land ambulances all attended the incident in Firth View Walk, Workington.

A spokesman for the Great North Air Ambulance said that the crew was called at 4.10pm to treat a male patient following an assault.

The victim was treated by paramedics from the air ambulance, which landed on the green near Firth View Walk.

It is understood it happened inside one of the properties on Firth View Walk.

Crowds gathered around the scene, including schoolchildren.

A Westfield resident said seven police vans, a scene of crime van and ambulance are at the scene.

The terrace of homes has been cordoned off.

He said: "I wasn't sure what was going on but the place is crawling with police and scenes of crime officers in their white suits.

"There was a stack of evidence bags that they've taken away. It was like something on the TV."

Barry Moore, of West View Walk, said: "The first thing I heard was the helicopter flying over so I rushed outside and all I saw was people running down the street shouting somebody had been stabbed.

"It's shocking."

Helena James, of West View Walk, said: "I was driving home and I saw lots of police cars outside the house. There was a man lying on the path with a woman stood next to him."

A man and a woman were later driven off in a police car.

It is understood armed police were also called out.

The victim was initially treated in a land ambulance, before being transferred into the Pride of Cumbria Great North Air Ambulance to be taken to hospital.

His condition is unknown.
